ACESO's student-led biomedical research initiative, exploring how existing medical technology can be adapted to improve safety and outcomes for the most vulnerable patients.

Care that started on the field, now reaching further.

ACESO, the Active Care and Education in Sports and Outreach Foundation, began in August 2024 around sports injury prevention for student athletes. It has grown into a broader health nonprofit centered on biomedical research support, health education, and community health engagement.

Research

Zweistein
Innovation Lab

The student-led biomedical research initiative of ACESO. Focused on early-stage, exploratory research rather than clinical deployment or commercialization. A research and educational effort, not a clinical laboratory.

Focus

Neonatal life-support systems.

We study premature infant care and extracorporeal life-support, including neonatal ECMO and artificial placenta platforms. Roughly 1 in 10 babies worldwide are born prematurely, and preterm birth complications are a leading cause of death in children under five.

In-Vitro Development of Innovative Anticoagulation to Reduce Neonatal Bioreactor Thrombosis

Therapeutic ultrasound as a drug-free alternative to chemical anticoagulation in neonatal extracorporeal circuits, tested in vitro with bovine blood. 2nd place, Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair, 2025.

Preclinical artificial-placenta and neonatal extracorporeal platforms: a systematic review

Examining circuit thrombosis, hemolysis, and anticoagulation strategy across preclinical platforms. Currently in preparation.

In June 2026, the ACESO team climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 19,341 feet, raising $12,980 for the Zweistein Innovation Lab and the Chinese Hospital of San Francisco. The climb connects our sports injury roots with advanced biomedical research.
